Night shifts

12 April 2016 | Ethiopië, Gondar

Sundaynight we started our week with night shifts hopefully to do more deliveries. Suprising after suprising in the hospital, every shift is à suprising even though we are already working here for two weeks.

I think the worst case we will share is the breech delivery. For the professionnels among us...you know the biggest rule....DONT TOUCH THE BABY BEFORE THE SHOULDERS ARE VISIBLE...well....we think that's a rule they forgot. The doctor which performed the procédure didn't do it before, the midwife who attended did it à lot...but...status is more important than saving à childs life, so they let him do it. It was really horrible. Hé was touching the bump of the baby when it was visible. After that hé was pulling the baby. At one moment we tought that the head would be seperated from the body. The baby didnt do anything, so we expected à bad outcome. Luckily we had very good midwifes attented so they prépared the resuscitation table. It was good to see. It was the first time we saw that they took precautions. They child was finally born after help with à midwife. Then we had up resuscitate the baby, well during that the résidents were coming and took over. We weren't that confident that the baby would survive. But amazingly after five minutes the baby was crying and breathing well. So that was a big suprise. The Babies here are really strong. They have à haert of à surviver. During the procédure Marleen was giving advice because she was assisting. But they didn't listened. Repeatly she said dont touch the baby. So afterwards we were thinking it was better if we did the procédure. We think it would had à better outcome, but we will never know...

To draw à picture: one night at the delivery room three woman were laying in line with no curtains so no privacy. Two woman were screaming out loud and they other one was mooning. So we did three deliveries at the same time. It was really a bit funny. When one woman was screaming the other woman was screaming even louder. So if you think about the best environment to deliver your baby. This was not the right environment. Lots of light, noises, people, screaming and no privacy. One woman was almost jumping out of the delivery bed while they wanted to place an episiotomy.

Another story. There is à doctor who comes from south sudan and he is really nice. Well the first night he offers his bed to Marleen to rest. The second night he offers his bed to Marianne , Only he Was sleeping in It at the Same time. So she poledly declined. The next evening We were drinking a cup of coffee with the doctor he Was making some moves, but then We heard from an other collague that he is looking for a second wife. He is already married and has kids. But if we are gonna marry him than our father gets 50 cows, so Its worth thinking about It , then my father can Start a Farm. In one of the other nights One collague convert Marianne to Islaam. And they are Also frequently saying that We have to date a habesha man before We are leaving. And we have to have one kid for the satisfaction.

An another Story. When we were sitting at the juice house a kid of three years old Was standing in the doorway spitting at us. Yesterday Marleen Was walking back Home and children we spitting again. This morning when We were walking to the hospital we almost get hit with Stones from a naked man walking by. So We almost run to the hospital to avoid attacks.

At one night during the shift there Was a multigravida woman, the delivery went smoothly but directly After that she was bleeding a lot. Then she collapse and was in shock. The placenta looked complete but the doctor wanted to do a manual placenta removing but the woman refused, started screaming and hitting. She said i dont want to, the bleeding will stop by itself. She had to sign a form that Its her own risk and then they left her alone. Marianne was checking her the whole night, she Was doing fine. The next morning Marianne saw her walking and smiling in the doorway saying: "cobus" (good). So It Was solved by itself so she Was right.

Today we went to Mekelle hospital After a lot of bureaucration. This day We Could only observe some deliveries and Coach the woman. But hopefully We can do It by ourself in the future. Its à big difference between Mekelle and Ayder hospital here Its very clean, a lot of privacy, separate rooms, good stitching thats what We saw at first sight. So we will see and decide if this is à better option.
