A struggle for life

01 April 2016 | Ethiopië, Gondar

How s the condition in Ethiopia? Well thats a question they frequently ask. If they really like to hear the truth, that's the big question...

We are really happy with our home, although we had no water for 3 days, but we survived! It's really cosy with the Belgium girls, and we have a new roommate, an Italian girl which is staying for 1 year.

Everyday we walk to the hospital and hear money, money, how are you? What is your name. They don't get used to us it seems...little girls are laughing, giving handshakes..we gave balloons sometimes, and then they are really happy...also the collegues if they see the balloons, they really enjoy them. It is a hot season now, also for ethiopian people. We make a lot of friends, especially with collegues. Last weekend we were invited by Dr. Afework. It was such a nice experience. A lot of food, good company, and good ethiopian coffee which they learned me how to prepare.

At the street skinny horses pulling heavy loads up the hill. Dead dogs lying in the street, bones of cows...it's all part of the life here.

At the hospital it is really quiet, we're still waiting for Dr.mahmud till he can transfer us to the other hospital. Maybe we will take nightshifts next week if we don't go to the other hospital.

Most of the time we take care of the newborn baby, it seems like if they don't care about that. Today there was a delivery with the forceps, I could assist, but the baby was not doing well. We stimulated the baby, but still the apgarscore was only 7, and the baby was moning, so we asked if he could transfer to the neonatal ward. It took a long time, but after 1 hour it finally was admitted. Because there is not much to do, we started cleaning...well, it is really nescessary! We start the day with cleaning the rooms, and the nursesroom. Organising charts, everybody is throwing everything on the ground. It is really messy. Charts are always lost, syringes are out and nobody is putting it in the same draw. We see a little bit of change because the other medical students are getting infected by us. They are also cleaning the rooms now and there are also effects with the families because we always give lower back massage. Now the students and family members are also giving massage to comfort the woman. The start of quality in the Labour ward. We also had a conversation with the man from the hospital who is taking care of quality at the wards. He was really glad that we had a lot of suggestions for improvements. Today there was a meeting for all the midwives and there they discussed about how to improve themselves at the Labour ward. So it was a heavy meeting, because two woman passed away last week. They were really upset about that. It was because of a lack of action. So little steps are made at the Labour ward. But we are confident. Now we are starting our weekend by going to local market to buy some stuff to survive and After that trying to get some wifi for some studywork. If we want we will get married before the internship finish, they really like dutch girls.
